Word list
DNEL: Derived no-effect level (reported separately as: worker-DNEL and general population-DNEL, for example as "worker-DNEL long-term for dermal route")
DMEL: Derived minimal effect level
NOAEL: No observed adverse effect level
LOAEL: Lowest observed adverse effect level
Leading health effect: The toxicological effect that results in the most critical effect
Critical effect = leading health effect
STEL: Short term exposure limit (typically 15 minutes)
8 h TWA: Time weighed average
Important EU Directives
Carcinogens and mutagens directive (2004/37/EC). This directive requires that workplace exposures are avoided/minmised as fas as technically feasible.
Notes on DNEL and DMEL
For threshold substances a DNEL is a level of exposure which should not be exceeded, indicating control.
For non-threshold substances a DMEL is a risk-related reference value that should be used for better target risk management measures.
